Aardwolf is a type of Friend that appeared in the original Kemono Friends mobile game, the manga, and the anime.
Appearance
Aardwolf has white and black hair tied into a messy ponytail - while mostly white, it fades into black at her middlemost bang and is completely black from ponytail onward. She has black irides with highlights, signfying she does not belong to an extinct species of animal. She has a white sleeveless dress shirt with a black striped pattern, as well as a tie of a similar color - the dress shirt in itself has a breast pocket on its right side. Alongside it, she wears similarly striped black and white gloves that go above the elbow, these fade completely to black at the hands. Below these, she wears black denim shorts, and the rest of her legs are covered by thigh-high stockings with the same pattern as her gloves. Finally, her feet are covered by black shoes. Like other Friends, she possesses traits of the animal she was born from alongside her normal human body. In her specific case, she has an aardwolf's tail and ears.

In Real Life
The Aardwolf is an insectivorous relative of the hyena residing in East and Southern Africa. Unlike hyenas, an aardwolf's teeth are not suited for eating or hunting large prey. Instead, they primarily feed on a diet of termites and other small insects, utilizing their long sticky tongue to capture them. It is one of the only 18 species of mammals to do so. Additionally, the nocturnal nature of the Aardwolf also correlates with the foraging behavior of their primary source of food, the Hodotermes and Trinervitermes termites.
The aardwolf mainly makes its home in arid, open plains and dry bushlands. These regions are incidentally also where the most prolific occurence of Hodotermes and Trinervitermes termites take place. Being monogamous, aardwolves spend each year in a collection of dens, usually numbering up to a dozen, which were abandoned by their previous inhabitants. They mainly communicate through anal gland scent markings, which they rub on foliages to either attract mates or establish territories. They rarely make vocal communication, in contrast to the spotted hyena.
The aardwolf has a distinctly thick mane, which they raise during confrontations in an attempt to appear more menacing. Aardwolves will pursue any trespasser to their dens for up to 400 meters, although they are neither adept runners or skilled at fighting off other predators. Aardwolf mortalities are usually caused by confrontation with other carnivores.
Trivia
- The aardwolf's name means "earth wolf" in Afrikaans and Dutch.
