Kemono Friends Kingdom is an officially-licensed Kemono Friends action-puzzle/strategy RPG first released in spring 2022 across a limited range, then re-released globally in summer 2023. Unlike previous Kemono Friends titles, such as the original mobile game and Kemono Friends 3, Kemono Friends Kingdom is set not in familiar Japari Park, but rather in a land called Kingdom—a theme park island where humans and Friends were meant to live and play in harmony, before mankind fled in the wake of the Cellien threat. The player assumes the role of a human who finds themselves waking up in Kingdom with no memories of how they arrived there, nor of when or why, and who joins up with various new companions on a quest to discover their past, shed light on the mysteries of Kingdom, and of course, to meet a grand cast of animal girls.
The game initially launched in May 2022, with servers only for the Singapore/Malaysia, mainland China, and Hong King/Macau/Taiwan regions being available. In April 2023, this version of the game was shuttered, and a global launch of Kemono Friends Kingdom went forwards in July 2023 with servers for the Americas (EST), Europe/Africa (EU), and Asia/Oceania (HKT). In June 2024, these three would be folded into a unified EST server.
Development
The original version of Kemono Friends Kingdom launched on May 31, 2022 to a dedicated Singapore/Malaysia server, though servers for mainland China and Hong Kong/Macau/Taiwan would follow closely. These aforementioned servers all used simplified Chinese as their only available in-game language. The game was licensed out for development and publishing to Chinese developer-publishers Game Beans (Gamebeans Entertainment Limited) (Hong Kong), Topjoy (Beijing Topjoy Game Technology Company Limited), and ZLONGAME (Zilong Game Limited) (Hong Kong), as well as Taiwanese developer Taiwan Game Tree (Taiwan Game Tree Limited Company). The Hong Kong/Macau/Taiwan server was attributed to Game Beans and Taiwan Game Tree, the Singapore/Malaysia server is believed to have been attributed to ZLONGAME, and the mainland China server was likely published under Topjoy. These servers would all close on April 14th, 2023, in preparation for the next stage of the game's life cycle.
Around a month later, on May 17, 2023, a global version of Kemono Friends Kingdom was announced and slated for release within a few months. This localized release was spearheaded by Hong Kong-based developer-publisher Neocraft Limited, alongside Topjoy; ZLONGAME, Game Beans, and Taiwan Game Tree are not known to have maintained involvement with the project beyond this point. Select regions would gain access to a series of three closed beta tests through Google Play; these ran from May 18 to May 31, June 9 to June 21, and June 28 to July 3 respectively. On July 3, the region-locked closed beta servers would shut down and the global open beta would release on July 13, 2023 for Android and iOS, available in seven languages: Chinese, Dutch, English, French, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish.
There were initially three main servers available: EST (Eastern Standard Time, serving the Americas), EU (European, serving Europe and Africa), and HKT (Hong Kong Time, serving Asia and Oceania). On June 13th, 2024, the EU and HKT servers would be unified with the EST server.
Plot
Prologue
- Story Quest: Prologue
The story opens with a human girl named Jinri waking up to find herself submerged in the depths of a river, surrounded by sunken ruins and near to drowning. Confused and fading fast, she snaps to attention at the sound of two voices beyond the water's surface; rallying her resolve, she is able to grab the attention of the strangers. One dives into the river and takes Jinri's outstretched hand in hers, pulling the girl out of the water and onto the shore just as she blacks out. Jinri soon wakes up, exhausted but alive—much to the relief of her saviors, who fret over the girl's condition and deluge her with questions, incidentally introducing one another in the process; the girl who first noticed Jinri's plight is the sharp but meek Chevrotain, and the the bold, white-clad girl who pulled her from the depths is called Least Weasel. Jinri notices the girls' fluffy ears and tails, but finds herself too weary and grateful to comment on their curious fashion sense. Little does she know that her rescuers were no mere humans in costume; they were beings known as Friends, and Jinri had unknowingly already taken her first step in a long journey on which she would meet Friends of all kinds, pursue her own lost memories, battle frightening monsters, and uncover the secrets of the ancient and mysterious land she'd found herself in.
Gameplay
Kemono Friends Kingdom is an action-strategy RPG, with some puzzle elements, designed for mobile devices. In Kemono Friends Kingdom, the player sends Friends riding atop a vehicle called a Patrol Plane into a 2-D battlefield, where they position themselves to fight enemy Celliens using their various talents and special abilities.
Friends
- Main article: Friends
Friends are the focal characters of Kemono Friends Kingdom and the Kemono Friends franchise as a whole. In Kemono Friends Kingdom, the player will encounter a variety of these animal girls and build teams to battle through levels in the main story, events, raids, and more, as well as learn about their various lives and personalities through their interactions with the player character and with one another. A list of all Friends available to meet in Kemono Friends Kingdom can be found here.
Each Friend has a particular specialty within a team's composition, as well as specific types of enemies against whom they have a combat advantage or disadvantage. These are their role and their Radiance, respectively.
Role
A Friends' role determines what she will generally best be able to contribute to a team. There are six roles in total, some of which are very similar to others and some which are wholly unique.
Role Name | Role Purpose | Example Friends |
---|---|---|
Guard | Enhances team DEF | Hippopotamus, Aurochs |
Assault | High single-target damage | Least Weasel, Serval |
Group Assault | High AoE damage | Crested Ibis, Northern White-Faced Owl |
Support | Enhances team stats, typically ATK | Eurasian Eagle-Owl, Gray Wolf |
Control | Reduces enemy stats and impairs enemy attributes | Shoebill, Jaguar |
Heal | Restores HP for the team | Chevrotain, Suri Alpaca |
Radiance
Kemono Friends Kingdom uses a "triangle-advantage" combat system, akin to rock-paper-scissors, wherein all Friends and Celliens possess one of three Radiance types. Friends will deal more damage to enemies of a Radiance they have an advantage over, and less damage to enemies who have a Radiant advantage over them; in turn, Friends are resistant to damage dealt by enemies of a Radiance that is weak to the target Friends' Radiance, but note that Friends do not receive bonus damage from Celliens possessing a Radiant advantage over them.
Radiance | Associated Archetype | Example Friends | Strong against | Weak Against |
---|---|---|---|---|
Splendor | Catapult Attack | Saltwater Crocodile, Red Junglefowl, Mouflon | Wonder | Brilliance |
Wonder | Power-Up / Leaf | Lion, Moose, Axolotl | Brilliance | Splendor |
Brilliance | Dice | Tsuchinoko, Sand Cat, King Cobra | Splendor | Wonder |
Item Name | EXP Granted | Flavor Text |
---|---|---|
Half a Bun | 500 | A bun bitten by someone before, but still edible. Moreover, Friends love sharing. Used to increase Friend EXP by 500. |
A Bun | 2,000 | A Kingdom Bun freshly made that smells and looks delicious. Friends with a big appetite can finish one in one bite. Used to increase Friend EXP by 2,000. |
A Plate of Buns | 5,000 | It seems to have many different flavors, such as sweet, salty, and fruity. Unfortunately, the flavor can't be told from its look. Used to increase Friend EXP by 5,000. |
A Bag of Buns | 10,000 | A full bag that comes with a luxury volume and various flavors. Used to increase Friend EXP by 10,000. |
Level
The main way Friends become stronger is by having their level increased by gaining EXP from clearing levels and from the use of Kingdom Bun items. Kingdom Buns can be acquired as gameplay rewards, or can be farmed through the Bountiful Forest area in the Adventure menu's Supplies section.
Combat
- Main article: Kingdom:Combat Mechanics Breakdown
Being a PvE game, the goal of any stage in Kemono Friends Kingdom is to reduce the HP—hit points—of all Cellien enemies present there to zero, defeating them and removing them from play. Friends also have HP, which must be managed in order to ensure they are not defeated by Cellien attacks. Because a team consists of at most seven Friends, a player must defeat any given stage within seven turns of play; if there are still any undefeated enemies by the time the seventh turn is resolved (ie. a Friend has been launched and all Friends and Celliens have taken their actions), the player loses that stage. Some stages also have their own criteria which must be met or avoided in order for a player to succeed; for instance, some advanced stages are automatically lost if any of the player's Friends are defeated.
Teambuilding
A team consists of at most seven Friends. The order in which Friends are placed into the team menu determines the order in which they will be sent into battle; the Friend to the leftmost side will be the first Friend deployed, and the Friend to the rightmost side will be sent out last. Assembling a team in the best order is crucial to ensure a player gets the most out of each team member's unique skills and is able to take advantage of enemy attack patterns.
Positioning Friends
In Kingdom's gameplay, the Patrol Plane—a transport vehicle shaped like a paper airplane, originally used to help guests, staff, Friends, and Lucky Beasts to easily move around Kingdom and, when needed, defend against Cellien attacks—is used to send Friends onto the battlefield to a location of the player's choosing. When a unit is loaded into the plane,
Players should be mindful of where they send a Friend, as most of the cast cannot be moved manually once they are placed. Additionally, some types of Friend will automatically move themselves to group up with other Friends, some cannot attack Celliens on their own and thus should not be sent into a solo fight, and some Friends who lack the Flight trait can even get stuck on high ledges if there are no Celliens in range for them to fight and no way for them to access other Celliens on the screen. The latter event is rare, but can occur if a ledge rests above a pit and has no nearby ledges at the same height; Friends can ascend and descend ledges above and below each other vertically, and jump across small gaps horizontally, but Friends cannot move diagonally unless they possess the Flight trait.
Attacking
Enemies can be damaged by direct hits from the Patrol Plane, and Friends will automatically follow up with basic attacks after they land and on each passing turn. The turn order of Friends and Celliens on the field is determined by their innate Speed stat; typically, Celliens have a Speed stat of 0 and will thus strike last, making the Speed tier hierarchy primarily relevant to determining the order in which Friends should be deployed and when their abilities, called Miracles, should be activated.
Miracles
A Miracle is a Friend's unique special attack, able to be used once per battle. Miracle effects tend to vary by the role of Friend using them; they can deal damage to enemies, heal allies, or provide stat buffs for the team. To activate a Friend's Miracle, tap on the Friend's icon at the bottom of the screen before you send out your Friend for the current turn of battle; it does not have to be used on the turn a Friend is sent out, and saving use of Miracles for just the right moment is key to advancing in Kemono Friends Kingdom.
As indicated previously, if you activate multiple Miracles on the same turn, your team members will execute them in descending order—highest to lowest—of their Speed stats.
Quests
Raids
Up to ten times each day, players can challenge a Raid Boss Cellien at one of six varying difficulty levels—Casual, Easy, Normal, Hard, Nightmare, and Ultimate— to compete for the highest score in their home server. The player leaderboard resets with each new day and the active Raid Boss rotates weekly, each cycle featuring a different assortment of Friends who grant a percentage-based score bonus if used in battle.
Rewards are granted to players based on their score relative to others. These include Mutated Shards, a currency used exclusively in the Raid menu's Redeem Reward shop to be exchanged for copies of a rotating pool of Friends. Friends in the Raid Shop can be purchased multiple times over, but the cost in Mutated Shards increases each time a purchase of a specific Friend is made. The Redeem Reward shop is the only way to acquire Reindeer, and was initially the only way to acquire Shoebill prior to her being run in a special gacha banner.
One-time rewards can also be earned every time a player hits a certain scoring threshold in Raid battles. There are 30 one-time reward pools to be collected in this way; Fluorites and Kingdom Buns are always granted, but each tier also grants one of: 100 Radiant Crystals, 100 Stargems, 5 Memory Crystals, or an Encounter Ticket, as received in a repeating order.
