Hilgendorf's Tube-Nosed Bat is a type of bat Friend that first appeared in the original Kemono Friends mobile game.
Appearance
Hilgendorf's Tube-Nosed Bat's old design had short, murky green hair; her eyes were blue. As with most bat Friends, she had characteristic bat ears, a pair of bat wings on her back, and prominent fangs in her mouth. She wears a black long-sleeved shirt with a murky green sailor uniform on top, accented with a red tie. Her murky green skirt fades into an orange color towards the bottom, and her cape follows the same pattern. She wears a traditional "Tengu" (天狗) mask on the side of her head, along with traditional red geta sandals, known as Tengu geta.

In Real Life
Hilgendorf's tube-nosed bat is a "widespread, but naturally rare"1 microbat species from the Vespertilionidae family, inhabiting hilly and mountainous areas of Japan, Kazakhstan, Korea, Mongolia, northeast China, and easternmost Russia, where it takes refuge in forests, caves and sometimes buildings.2 Their name comes from the small, protruding nostrils in their heads. They are about 5.5 cm in body length, and have grayish fur with silver-colored guard hairs.3
While relatively little is known about this elusive species, Hilgendorf's tube-nosed bat appears to be a ground-feeding specialist—a behavior highly unusual among bats, typically known as being vulnerable animals when grounded. Hilgendorf's tube-nosed bat is believed to rifle through leaf litter on all fours, picking out small invertebrates such as insects from the forest floor. This is corroborated by the fact that studied specimens have never been caught in traps higher than ground level; only pitfall traps have worked on them.4
Trivia
- The Japanese name of the animal, "テングコウモリ" (tengu koumori), is derived from the legendary tengu; this is also reflected in the traditional mask worn by the Friend.
