In Real Life

a male Thomson's Gazelle

Thomson's Gazelle, often referred to as "Tommie", is the most common species of gazelles in eastern Africa despite their limited range. They're around 60 cm tall at the shoulders and weigh around 25 kg. Their upperparts are fawn coloured and divided from the white underparts by a distinct black stripe. These markings are unique per individual. Both sexes grow ringed horns with the females horns being smaller and often deformed. Their diet consists of grass, seeds and leaves. They prefer dry, even burnt areas so they often travel back and forth between dry pastures and waterholes to drink.

Thomson's Gazelles live in small herds of 10 or more animals but they often merge into larger herds to look for fresh water. The females have their own herds where they move between their favorite areas. Young males also have their own herds until they become old enough to become territorial and start fighting over the areas with the females favorite spots. Females are pregnant for around 6 months after which a single fawn is born, usually at the end of the rainy season. For the first few months, the fawn stays hidden in the tall grass until it is old enough to join the mothers herd or a bachelor herd in the case of males.

Tommies can reach speeds of up to almost 85 kilometers per hour (50 miles per hour). Of their predators, which include lions and hyenas, only the Cheetah can out speed them. However, their greatest threat is the expansion of human settlements, agriculture and roads. They're a target of game hunting also simply as a trophy due to their beauty. Their numbers are quickly decreasing outside of nature preserves because of this.

Trivia

  • Thomson's Gazelle is the fifth fastest land animal
  • The species was named after Scottish Africa-explorer Joseph Thomson
  • A Thomson's Gazelle appeared in the movie Zootopia as a popstar voiced by Shakira
  • Monty Pythons flying circus mentioned Thomson's gazelles as a running gag
