In Real Life

Paraceratherium is a genus of extinct hornless rhinocerotoid, closely related to the modern-day rhinoceros but representative of a divergent lineage, which lived for the majority of the Oligocene and has been identified from fossils uncovered across eastern Europe, the Middle East, and Asia, with specimens discovered from the Balkans at the westernmost to China at the easternmost. While size estimates for this genus are somewhat tricky due to the incomplete nature of skeletons available for study, current suggestions place the average adult at around 7.4 meters in length and 4.8 meters in height at the shoulder, with maximal weight estimates placing the largest of individuals in the range of 15 to 20 tons. If accurate, these numbers mean the Paraceratherium genus contains the largest terrestrial mammals known to have ever existed, with the only animals coming close in total size being fellow giants such as some members of the extinct elephant genus Palaeoloxodon.

Much the same as its contemporary relatives, Paraceratherium is believed to have been herbivorous, with its great height allowing it to browse the foliage of tall trees much the same as the modern giraffe does. Its skull structure features a nasal incision which suggests the presence of a prehensile upper lip, as the modern rhinoceros possesses, or even an elephant-like proboscis.

Trivia

Friend Trivia

  • Despite the real life Paraceratherium lacking any horns, the Friend design has her carrying a weapon similar to that of all other rhinoceros Friends. One end possesses a blue rhinoceros horn, which is the most immediately comparable aspect of the weapon, but the other end bears two protrusions: a twisted green horn similar to that of a bovid or antelope, and an orange antler akin to what a stag deer may have. This is despite the fact that the rhinocerotoids are not especially closely related to either of these groups.

Species Trivia

  • Although Paraceratherium is typically considered to be the largest and heaviest land mammal known to science, they are still dwarfed in size when compared to majority of sauropod dinosaurs, the likes of which contain the largest land animals known to science; they are in turn outweighed by the extant blue whale, the single largest animal known to science.
