In Real Life
Basilosaurus isis is an ancient whale that lived in the ancient sea known as Tethys Sea during the middle and late Eocene period. Basilosaurus got its name because it was originally thought to be a marine reptile such as Plesiosaurus and Mosasaurus hence the name meaning "King Lizard", however it was later revealed to be a cetacean due to the shape of its teeth. Basilosaurus isis was slightly smaller than Basilosaurus cetoides, its estimated size was around 15-18 meters in length, while the estimated size of Basilosaurus cetoides was around 17–20 meters in length. Basilosaurus isis's tail proportion was also shorter than Basilosaurus cetoides which indicates the differences in both species' hunting strategy. Basilosaurus isis was the apex predator of the Tethys Sea, in contrast to Basilosaurus cetoides which only preyed on fish and large sharks such as Otodus. Basilosaurus isis seemed specialized on preying smaller whale species such as Dorudon, based on fossil evidence its preferred strategy for hunting Dorudon was by biting its head. Basilosaurus isis is found alongside many ancient cetacean fossils at the famous paleontological site in Egypt known as Wādī al-Ḥītān or Valley of the Whales.
