In Real Life
The Kit Fox (Vulpes macrotis) is a very small species of Fox that lives in arid and semi-arid regions of the southwestern United States, as well as northern and central Mexico. They are the smallest of the four species of Vulpes found in North America and are among the smallest of the vulpine species worldwide. They can be found in desert scrub and grasslands, but also occasionally agricultural and urban areas.
This species is nocturnal and primarily carnivorous, hunting primarily small animals, reptiles, insects, and the terrestrial birds. However, if food is scarce, they will eat fruits such as tomato and cactus fruit. and will not pass up carrion if they find it. They play an important role in the ecosystem by controlling the populations of small animals.
Kit foxes are typically monogamous; some pairs mate for life, but some will change over time. Both parents take care of and protect their young, and litter sizes usually range from 1-7 kits. They create large family dens in winter but eventually move out to find food and mates, so the structures are often taken over by other animals.
