In Real Life
Ryukyu Wild Boar is a subspecies of wild boar native to the Ryukyuan archipelago which includes Okinawa Island, Amami Ōshima and Iriomote island. They're generally smaller compared to the subspecies in mainland Japan. Their head-to-body length can reach 50-110 cm and weight reaches 20-50 kg. This is an example of Bergmann's law where animals in colder climates are generally larger than animals in warmer climates and as well as foster's rule stating members of species get bigger or smaller depending on the resources available to them, with island animals being smaller due to the scarcer resources.
Like other boars the Ryukyu Wild Boar is omnivorous. Their diet includes crops such as nuts, bamboo shoots, citrus, sweet potatoes, sugarcane etc. and small animals such as insects, snails, mice, and snakes. They also feed on sea turtle eggs on Amami and Yaeyama which has become a serious risk to the sea turtle populations. They breed twice a year. They have been considered to be a common food source in Iriomote island, but demand for Ryukyu boar meat has increased with the rise in tourism and population, which causes concerns for the population to decline due to over-hunting. As of now however they are on Least Concern status in the IUCN Red List index.
