In Real Life
The Platypus is one of the five extant species of mammals that lay eggs. It's the sole representative of its family and genus. Their weight varies from 0.7 kg to 2.4 kg, and their length depends on their gender; males being 50 cm in average total length while females average 43 cm. Its body and tail have a dense, brown fur which insulates air and helps keep the animal warm. The platypus has ankle spurs, in which only the males present venom, which works as a defense system against viruses and bacteria. The Platypus has a sense of electroreception that helps them locate their prey by detecting the electric frields caused by muscular contractions.
The platypus lives in the eastern coast of Australia, in rivers and on river banks. They sleep during the day and move mostly at night. Platypus are very good swimmers and spend most of their time in the water. Under the water, it keeps its eyes shut and uses its other senses to navigate due to the opacity of the water and the sediments present in it. It is odd to see them in the wild because they are not comfortable in very populated areas. It has unique and diverse features, like its duck-billed mouth, its otter-like feet and beaver-like tail, that had astonished European naturalists when they first discovered it, making them a symbol in Australia.
Trivia
- The fur of a platypus is fluorescent, and glows a cyan-like color under ultraviolet light. It is theorized that by absorbing natural UV light, it is capable of hiding more easily from predators, some of which use UV light to help them see.
