Water Deer are quite different from other deer though they still belong to the same family. They prefer swamps, rivers and other wet habitats. They use tall reeds to hide and love swimming. Perhaps their most discerning feature are their lack of antlers on both sexes. Instead, they have long canine teeth that protrude downward. The water deer is a small deer native to China and Korea. They're around a meter in length and half a meter tall at the shoulders. They weigh around 10 kilograms/22 pounds. They're brown with some creamy spots on the belly, rump and neck.

Water Deer are quite different from other deer though they still belong to the same family. They prefer swamps, rivers and other wet habitats. They use tall reeds to hide and love swimming; in fact, they're able to swim for miles and reach all kinds of islands. Instead of running like other deer, they appear to hop like rabbits. Perhaps their most discerning feature are their lack of antlers on both sexes. Instead, they have long canine teeth that protrude downward. Interestingly, these teeth are held rather loosely and can be moved back and forth and to the sides.

Water Deer are not aggressive towards humans, but they are very territorial towards other water deer, especially during mating season. They mark their territories with their scent marks and through visual marks, like bitten off reed and branches. Females will also chase away anything that comes too close when she is about to give birth. They use their long tusks to fight and due to the frequency of encounters, many are seen with visible scars and other injuries. Thanks to their tusks, they're also called Vampire Deer. However, that name may also refer to musk deer or muntjacs, who also look like deer with fangs, although they are not related.

Water Deer live solitary lives, especially males. Females, however, may live in loose groups, but will flee in different directions when in danger. Strangely enough, despite their solitary lifestyle, they will warn others of predators. Their tusks are only used to fight other Water Deer and they will try to hide or run from any other danger.
