The Reindeer is a species of deer native to the Scandinavia, Northern Russia and Canada. They're around 70 to 130 centimeters tall at the shoulders, around two meters in length and weight around 70 to 230 kilograms. Their coloration depends on their habitat; they're brown in woodlands and white in the snow of Greenland. Their undercoat is woolly and the top layer has long hollow hair that keeps them warm. Reindeer have large, hairy noses which warm up the cold air they breath. They have the largest antlers of all species of deer.
Reindeer live in herds of up to 500,000 individuals during seasonal migration but split into smaller groups of females in autumn for the breeding season. They are the only species of deer where both sexes grow antlers; The males are bigger and start growing earlier. The males use their antlers to fight other males during the breeding season. Prior and after breeding season the males gain weight in order to survive the rutting without needing to feed. Males lose their Antlers after that; females will keep theirs until May and immediately start growing a new pair. They use their antlers to defend against predators and clear away snow in search of food.
Reindeer have been domesticated by Scandinavian tribes over at least 3,000 years ago, being used for transportation, hides, milk and meat. They are threatened by habitat loss and the continued development of the arctic areas. While a healthy adult is save, their young, ill, old and weakened males at the end of the rut are vulnerable to being preyed on by bears, foxes, lions, wolves and many more predators. They're currently classified as vulnerable due to a 40% decline in their population within only 30 years.
