Looking at old tarpan pictures, they were approximately 1 metre tall, 2 metrea long and weighed around 450 kilograms. It can also be clearly seen that these animals had a shaggy, scruffy looking coat. The coloration ranges from dun to brown with a black dorsal stripe and black mane and tail. Black-and-white stripes sometimes occur on the legs and occasionally on the body. The winter coat has been known to turn white in very cold climates.
The tarpan believed to live in plains of Eurasia. They ranged from Southern France and Spain eastward to central Russia. Cave drawings of Tarpan horses can be found in France and Spain, and artifacts showing this breed can be found in Southern Russia where this horse was domesticated by Scythian nomads in about 3000 B.C.
Their diet are like any other horses, grass.
Rumours say that tarpan would often kick and bite people who handled them or refused to move when being led along a path. In other words, even while domesticated, they still retained quite a bit of their wild spirit.
Trivia
- The name "tarpan" or "tarpani" is from a Turkic language (Kazakh or Kyrgyz) name meaning "wild horse". The Tatars and the Cossacks distinguished the wild horse from the feral horse; the latter was called Takja or Muzin. In modern use, the term has been loosely used to refer to the predomesticated ancestor of the modern horse, though researchers discourage this use of the word, which they believe should only apply to the ancient Equus ferus ferus.
- There is some debate as to whether the modern Tarpan is extinct, preserved, or restored. Some say the horse exists in its pure form on preserves in Poland; others say the last Tarpan died in captivity between 1887 and 1919, and that those on the preserves are a mix of pureblooded Tarpan and local wild Polish peasant ponies.
