In Real Life
The fossa is unique to the forests of Madagascar, an African island in the Indian Ocean. Individuals have been reported to grow up to 6 feet long, and can weigh up to 26 pounds.
A relative of the mongoose, the Fossa has evolved to hunt Lemurs, with Lemurs comprising more than half of the Fossa's diet.Their diet also includes : Lizards, Frogs, Rodents, Birds and Reptiles, supplemented by domestic animals such as pigs and poultry. Hunting under the cover of night allows the dark coat of the Fossa to perform to its maximum capability, camouflaging the animal into the dense surrounding forest. They stalk their prey silently in the trees before leaping powerfully to capture it. The fossa possesses a long tail that facilitates hunting and maneuvering among tree branches.
A solitary and nocturnal mammal that patrols territories as large as four square kilometers, the Fossa marks its presence with scent released from their large anal gland. The Fossa spends the vast majority of its life high in the trees but is known to both hunt and move on the ground.
