The wild Banteng is an opposite of the domestic cattle we know in the west in many ways. They're so shy and elusive that they're unknown to anyone who isn't an expert in wild cattle (or a fan of kemono friends, but even here she remains rather unknown to the average fan); some even thought they were just a myth. They live in forests and feed on bamboo, grasses, fruit and leaves in open clearing but hide in the dense forest if they sense any danger.

Banteng are about the same size as our western cows, the males have long horns bending upwards and a dark brown or black coat while the horns of the females bend inward and their coat is reddish brown. Both sexes have white stockings on their lower legs and a big, white patch on their rump.

Banteng live in herds of up to 50 individuals, consisting of the alpha female, a single adult male, subordinate females and their offspring. Males will fight for the herds and right to mate with all the females. While captive groups mate all-year-round, wild banteng will only do so in May and June. Individuals have been known to reach ages of up to 20 in the wild and 26 in captivity. The Banteng is currently listed as endangered and on the verge of becoming critically endangered.

They're facing the very same threats that caused the extinction of the Aurochs in Europe 400 years ago; extensive habitat loss due to deforestation and creation of farmland, illegal hunting for their meat and horns and breeding with and into the domestic Bali Cattle. There's only an estimated 8,000 Banteng still alive, more than half of which in Eastern Cambodia; significant subpopulations are isolated and spread far apart, increasing inbreeding and vulnerability to diseases.
