The Gentoo Penguin is a type of penguin Friend that has made appearances in all Kemono Friends media to date. They have been featured as a member of the Penguins Performance Project in all its iterations. Gentoo Penguin is also known by the nickname Gen.

Appearance

Gen has long, black hair that reaches her waist, with orange highlights in the center of her bangs, symbolic of the beak of the real world bird. Her tail is long and distinctive, being identical in color to her hair. Her eyes are a lovely amber.

Gen is dressed in a "windbreaker" sports jacket designed to reflect the black and white plumage of the gentoo penguin, along with a white skirt and yellow boots. Her sleeves double as mittens, covering her hands entirely. She wears a pair of white headphones, with a design on either side that matches the color of her eyes.

In Real Life

A family of gentoo penguins on Wiencke Island.

Gentoo penguins, easily recognizable by the white stripe extending across the top of its head, are a common species of penguin native to Antarctica as well as numerous nearby islands in the far-southern hemisphere. Their long tails are particularly prominent amongst their fellow penguins.

They live in breeding colonies scattered across various sub-Antarctic islands, favoring ice-free surfaces where grass is present. They build their nests out of stone, and are prone to bickering with one another over stone ownership. Pairs of gentoos lay two eggs at a time, which are incubated by both parents. Gentoo chicks have grey backs with white fronts.

The penguins' diets mainly consist of crustaceans, rather than fish, but are known to eat whatever aquatic life they are able to feed on, depending on the area they live in. Gentoos are excellent swimmers, even among penguins, reaching speeds of 36 kilometers per hour (22 mph) underwater when on the hunt. This is a useful asset in avoiding their predators, which include sea lions, leopard seals and killer whales. Skuas, while they are no threat to an adult gentoo, are known to steal their eggs and prey upon their chicks.

Trivia

  • Gentoo Penguin's nickname (ジェーン) can also be translated either as "Jen" or "Jane", but 'Gen' is typically preferred in English due to its closer resemblance to the pronunciation of Gentoo, as well as it being used in the Crunchyroll subtitles. Supposedly it's actually properly romanized as "Gean" but Gen is still the preferred English translation.
  • The origin of the word "Gentoo" is unclear. It may come from an Anglo-Indian term used to distinguish Hindus from Muslims in India, or from the Portuguese gentil (meaning "gentile").
  • Behind the Emperor Penguin and King Penguin, the Gentoo Penguin is the third-largest living species of penguin in the world.
