A list of all Friends based on animals which are listed by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN)'s Red List of Threatened Species as having a conservation status of one of the following:
- Endangered (EN) is for species which have been determined to be at risk of extinction—completely disappearing from the wild—in the near future without meaningful human intervention. EN is the second-most severe conservation state, and is often indicated by the color orange in IUCN material such as graphs.

- Critically Endangered (CR) is for the endangered species which are in the most dire state, being extremely susceptible to extinction in the near future without serious intervention. CR is the most severe conservation state, and is often indicated by the color red in IUCN material such as graphs.

Some definitions of "endangered" may extend to species that are Extinct in the Wild (EW), but it is considered both by the IUCN and in a general sense to be distinct from endangerment, due to the overarching goals of species preservation not simply being to ensure that living specimens of a species remain, but also ensuring that a species persists within its natural ecosystem. As such, a list of Friends whose original species have a designation of EW can be found at this page.
