The term UMA is comparable to the English term "cryptid", referring to an organism beyond the domain of current zoological taxonomy. Friends listed as UMAs include those with origins based in as myths and legends, folklore, spiritualism, the supernatural, the extraterrestrial, and—as previously suggested—the field of cryptozoology.

This list includes most Friends who are based on mascot characters of other businesses or characters representing other franchises, as Friends of these groups are most typically listed as UMAs within Kemono Friends media regardless of whether or not their origins meet that definition.
