Adult boomslang

Boomslangs are a venomous snake species endemic to sub-Saharan Africa, most commonly found in the central and southern regions of the continent. The boomslang is a slender snake that averages 1 to 1.5 m (3.5 to 5 ft) in length, it has a small, stubby, egg-shaped head and very large eyes. Males have a variety of color shades from solid bright green to rust-red or a combination of black and yellow. Females have a dull olive-brown or gray color.

Their main diet consists of small arboreal lizards and frogs, including chameleons. Occasionally, they feed on small mammals, birds, the eggs of reptiles and birds. These diurnal, arboreal snakes spend most of their day hunting in trees and shrubs, carefully gliding through tree branches until an ideal hiding place is found. They will occasionally move to the ground for the primary purpose of hunting and soaking up the sun.

Boomslangs are solitary reptiles that rarely communicate with other animals unless they feel threatened, and will even prey upon other members of their own species.
