In Real Life

A curled king cobra.

King cobras- which despite their name are not true cobras, belonging to their own Ophiophagus genus rather than the genus of the true cobras, Naga- live mainly in the rain forests and plains of India, southern China, and Southeast Asia. These adaptable snakes are comfortable both on land and in trees, and are capable swimmers; this allows them to occur in a wide variety of habitats, across which their coloration can vary notably from black-and-white to shades of brown. The king cobra typically weighs about 6 kg (13 lb), and averages 3 to 4 m (9.8 to 13.1 ft) in length. This makes it the world's longest-bodied venomous snake species, and a record specimen of 5.85 m (19.2 ft) long helps to cement this title firmly.

The preferred prey of the king cobra is other snakes; cobras, vipers, water snakes, small pythons, and tree snakes are all among the types of snake eaten by the king cobra, which is an apex predator within its range. King cobras also commonly take lizards as prey, but in times of scarcity may target small birds or mammals. In captivity, the species can be weaned on conventional food items such as rodents.

King cobras are highly adapted hunters, with a sensitivity to earth-borne vibrations allowing for physical detection of movement up to 100 feet away and sharp eyesight allowing for visual detection of prey up to 300 feet away. These are complimented by a keen sense of smell granted by their vomeronasal organs, to which chemical information is fed by the tongue-flicking behavior iconic of snakes. They have two short fangs which can inject a paralyzing venom into a victim, which also interferes with the ability of the blood to clot; the subsequent blood loss from the bite, in tandem with the powerful venom, means prey tends to expire quickly. They are able to bite multiple times in succession, increasing the odds of a successful venom delivery and creating additional injuries from which blood can flow. Once prey is safely dispatched, the king cobra is able to swallow suitably-sized items whole by virtue of its flexible jaws.

King cobras are not aggressive snakes, typically not going out of their way to cause issues and generally preferring to retreat from a disturbance rather than face off against it, but they are known to be irritable and can be defensive when their space is not respected. This is especially true of a nesting snake; a king cobra disturbed while incubating eggs can be highly dangerous, quickly striking at intruders. When provoked, these snakes will hiss loudly as they raise their heads, bare their fangs, and flare their hoods in an intimidation display similar to that of a true cobra, hence their given misnomer.

Trivia

  • The king cobra is the national reptile of India.
  • The venom of a king cobra can kill an adult human in as few as 30 minutes; thus, treatment must be delivered quickly.
  • King cobras have a very deep hiss which many people have likened to a growl.
  • The "king" part of the snake's name is derived from its specialization in hunting other snakes, making it a "king among snakes" of sorts.
  • The king cobra is prominent in the folklore and mythologies of Bangladesh, India, Myanmar, and Sri Lanka.
