Secretive, solitary, and nocturnal, the Caracal, native to India, Africa, the Middle East, and some of Asia, is a cat that is noted to be extremely difficult to observe. Slender yet robust, the Caracal is characterized by it's long ears and lengthy canine teeth. With males weighing up to 18 kilograms, and females weighing up to 13 kilograms, the Caracal displays sexual dimorphism, with females smaller in almost aspects than males. With a uniform coat, typically red-tan or light brown, the Caracal has soft and short fur. In some rare cases, black fur has been observed. Often confused with another cat, the Lynx, due to the similarity between the sharp ear tufts, the Caracal lacks any spot camouflage on its coat, unlike the Lynx.

Red-tan Caracal. Note the large ear tufts.

Like many other cats, the Caracal, a carnivore, preys upon a wide range of animals, which include : Sheep, goats, birds, rodents, rock hyraxes, hares, and bush vlei rats. To heal their immune system and/or to kill any parasites in their digestive systems, Caracals may consume grapes or wild grasses. A common trait with many other cats, the Caracal is able to kill prey many times larger than itself, including : impalas, bushbucks, kudu, and other antelopes. They very commonly attack and stalk domestic livestock, but tend to avoid humans. With stronger hind legs than front legs, the Caracal has a very powerful jumping ability, able to leap more than 3 meters into the air to catching flying birds.

Ranging across a large portion of Eur-Asia, the Caracal inhabits environments such as : savannas, forests, marshes, semi-deserts, and lowlands. They tend to prefer areas with less rainfall and low cover for prey. In Africa, their range has decreased significantly. Due to agricultural expansion and desertification as a result of poor agricultural practice, habitats of Caracals are frequently destroyed. Human predation is also common due to the Caracal's tendency to kill livestock.
