Aurochs is an extinct animal Friend who has made appearances in the Kemono Friends anime as well as the original mobile game.
Appearance
Aurochs has short, greenish-brown hair that becomes lighter at the middle. There are curved protrusions of hair that are a whiteish, dull brown color, which represent the auroch's horns. She also has auroch ears. Her skin is tanned, and she has brown, shineless eyes. She wears a militaristic uniform that has green and brown camo patterns, with the shirt in particular being tied by an orange tie - it also appears to have a long-sleeved black undershirt. Her shirt is small and exposes the majority of her stomach. She has a pantyhose and wears greenish-brown boots with orange tips. Like other horned Friends, she has a spear-like weapon that is lightly curved and has auroch horn-like ends. She also has a tail that belongs to her species, the aurochs.

In Real Life
Aurochs is the ancestor of modern cattle. It was the largest animal in Europe with an impressive height of up to 1.80 meters (6 feet) and a weight of around 1,000 kilograms (2200 lbs). Males would have a dark brown or black colour while cows kept the brown colour all aurochs share at birth. Bulls and cows alike had big horns growing outward and forward, with the bulls horns being larger. Their habitat once ranged from Great Britain and North Africa in the west to India and Korea in the east.
Aurochs was a grazer and had a big ecological influence as a maintainer of the grasslands. To establish a hierarchy in their herds and during mating season in late summer, the bulls fought each other severely, often leading to the death of the defeated. Despite their size, bulls were very swift and fast. While they're usually docile, they would become very aggressive and dangerous if provoked. Those qualities made them popular as combatants in the arenas of the Roman Empire.
Humans had started domesticating aurochs long ago all around the world and bred them into eventually becoming the various breeds of modern cattle. There were very few predators that dared prey on the aurochs; only the big cats of Asia and Africa as well as bears would attack a healthy adult. Through modernization of the grasslands and hunting, humans would further push them out of their natural habitat. By 500 BC, they had already disappeared from Greece, long after already being gone from Asia and Africa; in 1200 AD they would only live in north-east Europe from East Prussia to Lithuania. Last attempts started by Poland in the 1500s to preserve the species proved futile with the last remaining aurochs, a female, dying of natural causes in 1627.
Trivia
- Its scientific name "Bos primigenius" means 'firstborn cow'
- Taxonomists are unsure whether to consider domesticated cattle a subspecies of aurochs. Those who do call aurochs 'Bos primigenius primigenius' and modern cattle 'Bos primigenius taurus' while others drop the middle name.
- There are many projects in Europe attempting to 'recreate' the aurochs by 'back-breeding'; crossing modern cattle breeds that have lots of aurochs genes left in them with each other.
- Caesar described the aurochs in his books commenting on the Gallic wars.
