The Great Hornbill is a species native to southeast and east Asia, with a small population in Singapore. Along with their black, white, and yellow plumage, most prominent feature is the yellow and black "casque" atop its bill, resembling a helmet. The purpose of this structure is unknown, but females can be distinguished by a red coloration on the back. They most often eat fruit but will also feed on smaller animals, tossing prey into the air to catch and swallow. | |||
Great Hornbills are very social animals, often living in groups and congregating in the same tree to eat. Although they sometimes form communal roosts, they are monogamous birds. After mating, the female finds a hollow tree and seals herself inside with a plaster of feces and depends on the male to bring her food.
