Reindeer live in herds of up to 500,000 individuals during seasonal migration but split into smaller groups of females in autumn for the breeding season. They are the only species of deer where both sexes grow antlers; The males are bigger and start growing earlier. The males use their antlers to fight other males during the breeding season. Prior and after breeding season the males gain weight in order to survive the rutting without needing to feed. Males lose their Antlers after that; females will keep theirs until May and immediately start growing a new pair. Reindeer have been domesticated by Scandinavian tribes over at least 3,000 years ago, being used for transportation, hides, milk and meat. They are threatened by habitat loss and the continued development of the arctic areas. While a healthy adult is save, their young, ill, old and weakened males at the end of the rut are vulnerable to being preyed on by bears, foxes, lions, wolves and many more predators.
