In Real Life

In real life, the black-backed jackal comes from Africa, and gets its name due to its black 'saddle' pattern across its back. The rest of its fur is a reddish color, close to tan. The black-backed jackal also makes an appearance in the novel *The Jungle Book*, where it's treated as one of the lowest animals in the jungle and referred to as a 'dish-licker'.

These jackals are known to be one of the more vocal animals in the animal kingdom. It's not uncommon to hear jackals crying out in the early evening, responding and hearing one another until an eerie chorus is created. Should a predator like a lion or leopard try to sneak through jackal territory and is caught, the finding jackal will tail the predator while yapping in order to give away its position.
