Hippopotamus, also known as Hippo, is a big sister figure and dedicated guardian to Friends everywhere, especially those who live with her in the savanna area; other Friends often call her Sister Hippo or Ms. Hippopotamus. She spends most all of her time in or around the Silent River, which she's claimed as her territory- and as one of the mightiest Friends around, she can defend that claim handily. No Cellien who crosses her or threatens her Friends escapes unscathed.

Though her demeanor is typically a calm and gentle one, Hippopotamus can be quite temperamental; this is especially apparent when she finds herself in a position where her sensitive skin is drying out, which causes her mood to drop like a stone. As such, she is almost always found near her river home, and as a result she knows the area inside and out. She knows exactly where the terrain gets rough, where dangerous plants grow, and how to get from one place to another in no time flat.

Role in the Plot

Main Story

Hippopotamus is one of the first Friends Jinri meets on her journey, teaming up with her party and Eurasian Eagle-Owl to repel an attack by a Lady in White, a Boss-level Cellien.

Relationships

Jinri

Hippopotamus is one of the first Friends to meet Jinri, and often appears as a helpful figure in the girl's travels across the savanna area.

Saltwater Crocodile

These two have a friendly rivalry, each acting in the role of a large-bodied, sisterly river guardian. They have their differences, but bear one another no ill will.

Serval

Serval is a Friend who particularly looks up to Hippopotamus, and Hippo sometimes can't help but spoil the feline Friend with Kingdom Buns.

Feel My Gentleness		Hippopotamus pummels the ground and shatters rocks to hit an enemy unit, dealing PDMG equal to 460% PATK while gaining a Passive, Sister Hippo's Reminder. Hippopotamus takes over a place and does her best to protect all the Friends in combat, granting them +5919 DEF. Awaken Tier 1/2: For the next 7 rounds, receives +2%/+4% healing.

When Hippopotamus is in water, her Miracles are 10% more effective.		Miracles are 75% more effective. The bonus effect is reduced by 25% upon taking damage, down to 0%.

Serval, Hippopotamus			All Friends' ATK +7% for 7 rounds. The Friend that activates this combo gains extra +28% ATK for 1 round.
Special Attributes
Sister Hippo's Reminder: When Hippopotamus gets a buff, all the Friends in combat gain 3 stacks of DEF bonuses, each stack increasing DEF by +33 for 7 rounds. Upon taking damage, loses 1 stack. This can activate only 1 time every round. This Friend is immune to Drowning when underwater. This Friend can grant other Friends a Shield.

Strategy

• Even when a Boss would be underwater in the Main Story, such as the Cowardly Clam, they are not considered to be underwater when they appear as a Raid Boss; as such, Hippopotamus' second Habit, The Lord of Ponds, does not have a use in Raids.
  • Even if it did, it would frequently be outclassed by the much larger boon of her third Habit, despite its downside.

• Hippopotamus pairs well with Serval, as their Combo will grant Serval with an effective +35% ATK if she activates the Combo. However, as space can be tight on Catapult-focused teams, she isn't mandatory.

• Hippopotamus doesn't seem to be very good at waiting... As time passes, her temper starts to fray. Remembering the favor she is doing you, Hippopotamus her fury mounts... (Through clenched teeth) Am I... not... generous?
• Hippopotamus is thinking about the Hot Spring Resort she heard about today, the petal baths, milk baths, grapefruit baths... These humans know a thing or two about bathing... "Well, when I'm done here I'm going to go and have a nice long bath..."
• The sun is blazing down and the grass is baked dry. Hippopotamus' skin starts to sting and her mood quickly deteriorates. "Hah, I'll never understand how Saltwater Crocodile can bask in the sun all day long!"
• There is a sudden and torrential downpour. Hippopotamus can't help herself and starts cavorting and splashing around in the rain under the ominous thunderhead. After all, a shower is just as good as a bath!
