In the Source Material
Tachikoma are fictional, spider-like walker robots found in the Ghost in the Shell universe, employed for use in matters of domestic and national security. A typical Tachikoma unit has four legs, two arms, a single-occupant cockpit, tools such as firearms and cables, and adaptive camouflage systems. Their armor is light to allow for mobility; it is sufficient to block out small-arms fire, but cannot stand up to heavy weapons. Standard Tachikoma walkers are painted blue; other colors have only been seen in robots working non-security professions, under special circumstances.
They operate on sophisticated AI, allowing each unit to have a unique personality, though they are generally of a somewhat childlike disposition; this gives way to professionalism when operating in the field. Because their systems are synchronized on a nightly basis, causing them to share the same collective memories of personal experiences, Tachikoma units frequently become confused among themselves as to who is who. They usually act independently on orders given by humans remotely, but can also be controlled directly by a pilot. As the series progresses, the nature and potential of the Tachikoma units is explored in ways which notably impact the world of Ghost in the Shell.
This yellow Tachikoma is one of three unique Tachikoma walkers to appear in Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, having been repainted and retooled for work in construction. It is known as Tachikoma Yellow, or Tachiyellow.
