A Southern Rockhopper Penguin Friend addressed simply as Rockhopper appears in chapter 17 of the Kemono Friends Manga. In her only appearance, she meets with Crested Ibis to give her a singing lesson after being asked by Nana and Ezo Red Fox. Like every other generation of Southern Rockhopper Penguin, she is a member of the idol group PPP.
Rockhopper is a passionate singer who carries herself with a cool rock-and-roll edge. When assisting Crested Ibis with singing advice, Rockhopper thoroughly impresses her with passion and coolness. She is also kind enough to give a singing lesson to Crested Ibis on her day off from PPP related work.
Role in the Plot
After Ezo Red Fox's chat with Crested Ibis about wanting to improve her singing, where Ezo Red Fox promises to ask Nana to call up a skilled singer to give Ibis a lesson, Rockhopper makes her appearance as the one to answer the call.
On one of PPP's days off, Rockhopper meets with Ibis and Ezo Red Fox for the lesson. Rockhopper tells Crested Ibis that "Heart is the life of a song" and to "Get your heart burning hot and put some feeling into it". Rockhopper then asks Ibis to sing, telling her to "Bring your feelings out to the forefront and sing from the core of your body". When she does as asked, Crested Ibis' singing causes both Rockhopper and Ezo Red Fox to fall over. Ibis is worried that she did not do as asked, but Rockhopper says that she doesn't seem suited for solo singing. Recalling that Scarlet Ibis also enjoys singing, Rockhopper decides to have her meet with Crested Ibis to sing together.
When they do meet, the two find that their singing actually has improved and decide to sing at the Japari Park Fall Music Fest one month later. Rockhopper makes her final appearance as an audience member at the performance with the rest of PPP. Rockhopper and the audience then watch as Crested Ibis and Scarlet Ibis sing a song in a pleasant harmony. However, Scarlet Ibis decides to interrupt Ibis and sing by herself, which results in her out of tune singing driving the audience away.
