Kingdom
Kingdom is the titular setting of the Kemono Friends Kingdom mobile game. While Kingdom is highly similar to the Japari Park of other Kemono Friends media, various differences in their histories and environments distinguish the two settings.
History
Like with Japari Park, the history of Kingdom can be parsed relative to the role of humankind within its past and present.
Before Human Introduction
It is not known when or how the land mass known as Kingdom was formed, or if Friends appeared on the island before or after humans arrived there.
During Human Habitation
When humans discovered and convened upon the island, they at some point established the theme park known as Kingdom, where humans and Friends could live and play together in harmony; it is unclear whether Kingdom is also the island's given name, or if it only adopted that moniker after the theme park had faded from the memories of inhabitants. In order to help maintain the park and care for the Friends living there, humanity invented Lucky Beasts to serve as tour guides, security, and food distributors. At some point, the Kingdom Bun was developed as a nutritionally balanced food source for Friends, meeting the unique dietary needs of their respective base species.
Stoat and Jinmengyo are suggested to have coexisted with humans during their time in Kingdom, making these two Friends quite old by the time of the game's main story.
The appearance and propagation of Celliens caused great turmoil in Kingdom. While it is believed that humans attempted to repel the creatures with their warfare technology, their efforts proved unsuccessful. Eventually, humanity would elect to evacuate Kingdom and leave the resident Friends to eke out a peaceful life, fending for themselves against the Celliens while remaining under the care of the Lucky Beasts. It is not explained within the canon of Kemono Friends Kingdom as to why the Friends could not be evacuated alongside humankind.
After Human Exodus
In the wake of humanity's departure from Kingdom, the park was left to deteriorate over the course of thousands of years prior to the events of Kemono Friends Kingdom's main story. The park deteriorated and was overtaken by nature; it is probable that the task of such extended and widespread upkeep was too much for the Lucky Beasts to handle alone, and they seem to have taken to prioritizing the production and distribution of Kingdom Buns in the absence of human visitors to guide.
As generations of Friends would come and go and the relics of old would decay into dust, the knowledge of Kingdom's past would slowly be lost and society would develop anew among the Friends of the land. It is suggested during Story-16: A Ghost and a Black Box that even knowledge of music, song and dance had been lost to a degree. Friends would come to reside in villages of their own, though it is unclear whether these villages came before or after the fall of the theme park, as is the case for the reign of Kings who oversee the various Areas.
Geography
Kingdom is a highly diverse landmass host to all kinds of different biomes.
Areas
Kingdom is divided by its distinct biomes into sectors called Areas. Friends tend to live in the Areas most similar to the environments their base species would inhabit in the wild, but this is not a strict rule; various Friends exist in Areas that do not correlate to their species' preferred habitat, or have nomadic lifestyles taking them across the Areas. Types of Areas known to be found in Kingdom include:
- Desert Area, its sandy dunes inhabited by desert-adapted Friends such as Sand Cat and Wild Bactrian Camel
- Jungle Area, with lush canopies home to Friends such as Jaguar and Scarlet Macaw
- Ocean Area, where oceanic Friends such as Short-Beaked Common Dolphin and Chinese White Dolphin play
- Savanna Area, in which many different Friends such as Serval and Caracal can be found
- Sky Area, sometimes also called Mountain Area, where a cafe owned and maintained by Suri Alpaca can be visited for a drink
- Snowfield Area, where frost-resistant Friends such as Stoat and Mountain Hare make their homes
- Waterfront Area, rich with streams, marshes and ponds, where Friends such as Saltwater Crocodile and North American Beaver swim freely in pristine waters
Notable Locations
Castles
Castles are important structures in Kingdom's various Areas which serve as homes and/or bases of operation for powerful Friends known as Kings, as well as their loyal Guards. Kingdom's Castles are not strictly castles in the conventional sense of a fortified building; they can be any type of large or significant natural or man-made structure deemed to possess innate value, be it historical, strategic, aesthetic, or so on forth; some examples include giant trees, shipwrecks, and pyramids. Known Castles in Kingdom include:
- Churaumi Castle: an abandoned seafaring vessel in an Ocean Area, inhabited by avian Friends.
- King: King Penguin
- Guard: Unknown
- Desert Castle: a large sandstone pyramid in a Desert Area, where several reptile Friends live.
- King: King Cobra
- Guard: African Rock Python
- Ice Castle: A Castle of unknown construction, found in a Snowfield Area. Little is known about it, as it has not been seen in-game.
- King: Unknown
- Guard: Unknown
- Jungle Castle: a supermassive tree in the midst of a Jungle Area.
- King: African Bush Elephant
- Guard: Shoebill
- An unknown Castle visible from the Park lobby. It is unclear if this is a Castle in the sense of those aforementioned, or simply a building shaped like a traditional European castle.
Friend-made and/or Man-made Structures
- Bun Factory: Kingdom's Kingdom Bun production factory can be found in an area called the Bountiful Forest.
- Cable Car Station: A cable car station that houses cable cars to carry passengers up and down one of Kingdom's mountains, allowing them to reach the mountaintop Japari Cafe where Suri Alpaca resides and does business. Haruka and her Lucky Beast maintain the cable cars to ensure their safe function, as Friends continue to use them in the absence of human visitors.
- Game Corner: An arcade in a Snowfield Area. Ezo Red Fox can often be found here, and the building hosted the potluck seen in the Rabbit Hero & Exquisite Feast event.
- Haruka's Cabin: A large wooden cabin in or near the Savanna Area and in view of the Jungle and Mountain Areas. Equipped with an observation telescope. Maintained by Haruka and her companion Lucky Beast.
- Kingdom Path: The now-derelict main road once heavily used for movement throughout Kingdom.
- Park Houses: Five buildings found in the Park area of Kingdom. They are the House of Earth, House of Air, House of Water, House of Life, and the Main House.
- Plains Village: A village in the grassy green Plains Area where numerous Friends native to different Areas reside, living peacefully under the protection of the Plains Patrol.
- Savanna Village: A village in the Savanna Area where some savanna-residing Friends live.
- Stage of Penguins: A performance stage in the Waterfront Area where PPP groups historically performed their concerts. Features a storage room housing an old piano, which can be wheeled out onto the main stage.
- Subway system: An underground subway system extends under Kingdom; its full extent remains unseen, but it is likely that its tunnel network stretches across most of the island. It is known for certain that some of its tunnels run under part of the Ocean Area's shoreline.
Natural Landmarks
- Bountiful Forest: A lush forest where supply stations and Kingdom's Kingdom Bun production factory can be found.
- Mine Riverbank: A river and riverbank in a forested area, the water aglow with Fluorites. The deposits are richest at the river's end.
- Pine Cone Forest: A coniferous forest where many pine cones can be collected. A man-made trail runs through it.
- Sandstone Dunes: An area of ruins in a forested mountainous area rich with Sandstar; powerful Celliens are thus attracted to it.
- Silent River: A long, winding river that flows across Kingdom, carving through the Savannah and Waterfront Areas before flowing out of the Ocean Area.
