White Lions are the result of a rare mutation. A recessive gene causes the loss of pigmentation. It is different from albinism and does not affect the eyes. The Timbavati Game Reserve in north-eastern South Africa has a lot of White Lions, so it was thought they were a subspecies endemic to the reserve.
All these White Lions and many carriers of the gene were captured subsequently bred for zoos and wildlife parks. Though this may result in high inbreeding, none have shown signs of defects yet.
