In Real Life

The scarlet ibis is popular in zoos the world over for its beautiful plumage and charismatic presence.

The scarlet ibis is a brightly colored bird native to South America. It is carnivorous, eating fish, frogs, reptiles and crustaceans, taking advantage of its long and sensitive bill. Its plumage is a gorgeous scarlet, owing to high amounts of carotene in its diet.

Characteristically social animals, the ibises are known to live in extensive colonies amongst themselves and other birds. They are typically monogamous animals, pairing off for life after finding a mate. Their simple nests are constructed somewhat haphazardly, featuring a loose platform of sticks. To avoid predation, they favor mangrove trees well above the water to protect their eggs and chicks. In contrast to adults, the plumage of juvenile scarlet ibises is a mix of gray, brown and white. Around the time that they begin to fly, the color starts changing, spreading across the body after about two years.

Scarlet ibises are excellent flyers and are prone to migration, traveling as far as southern Florida. They are aggressive birds that will attack other species in order to steal their food, utilising their beaks, wings and legs. Despite this, for safety in numbers, they are known to congregate with other avian creatures.

Trivia

  • Scarlet Ibis' Japanese name, "Shōjō Toki", is a reference to a mythological creature known as the shōjō, a sea spirit with a fondness for alcohol. While the bird itself has no connection to Japanese culture, it was given this name due to sharing similarities with the shōjō's signature red face and hair.
  • A popular short story, written by American author James Hurst, is named after the scarlet ibis.
  • The scarlet ibis is a national bird of the Caribbean island nation of Trinidad and Tobago, along with the rufous-vented chachalaca.
  • The scarlet ibis is the only shorebird with a red coloration in the world.
