The Royal Penguin is a type of penguin Friend which first appeared in the Kemono Friends anime.

In Real Life
The royal penguin lives in the waters around Antarctica, much like other species of penguin. Their most noteworthy feature is the yellow plume of feathers across the top of their head, as well as their large size compared to other penguins. For a while, royal penguins were thought to be the same species as the macaroni penguin, which sports a similar plume of feathers. However, it was discovered that royal penguin's faces are mostly white, while macaroni penguin's faces are totally black. [1]
Most royal penguins live on Macquarie Island, where no other species of penguins are known to reside. The penguins on Macquarie Island form very large colonies, with one of the largest totaling at approximately 500,000 pairs. While foraging food, penguins can travel up to 600km away from Macquarie Island before returning in three week's time. [2]
Royal penguins eat krill, fish, and squid. They achieve this by diving to depths of approximately 50-150ft and chasing down their prey. By using their flippers and feet, they can reach swimming speeds of up to 20MPH, which makes them highly effective hunters. [3] If left unguarded, the chicks and eggs of the royal penguin can be taken by predatory birds, such as gulls and petrels. Once the penguin reaches adulthood, their only predators are water-based animals such as seals and orcas. [4]
