冬には純白、春には黒い羽毛が混じり、夏には白・黒・茶の斑模様になる、国指定の特別天然記念物です。氷河期に日本へ渡ってきて、高山に残ったものが住み着いたと考えられています。温暖化や捕食者の進出など環境の変化により数を減らし絶滅の危機に瀕しているため、保護増殖活動が進められています。 「寒いのは好きなんですが、暑いのは苦手なので木陰で休んでます。あ、雷は平気です！怖がって隠れちゃう子もいるけど、普通に散歩しちゃいます(笑)。でもあんまり遠出はしないですね。住むところの雰囲気が変わると、体調崩しちゃうんです。繊細なんですかねぇ……。守ってくれますか？」	{{{endescription}}}
