The Red Kangaroo is the largest marsupial in the world. They have long pointed ears and a squared-off muzzle. Males have short red-brown fur, fading to pale buff below and on the limbs. Females are smaller than males and are blue-grey with a brown tinged. Red Kangaroos also have two forelimbs with small claws, two muscular hind-limbs which are used for jumping, and a strong tail which is often used to create a tripod when standing upright. Their legs work much like a rubber band, with the Achilles tendon stretching as the animal comes down, then releasing its energy to propel the animal up and forward which enables the characteristic bouncing locomotion. Male kangaroos grow up to 5.2 feet tall with a tail that adds another 3 feet to its length. Females are considerably smaller growing to just over 3 feet with an additional 2 feet added for the tail. They are too big to be subject to significant non-human predation. They can use their robust legs and clawed feet to deliver kicks and blows.

The kangaroos range of vision is approximately 300° due to the positioning of its eyes.

The red kangaroo ranges throughout western and central Australia. its range encompasses grassland, scrubland and desert habitats. It typically stays in open habitats with some trees for shade. Like most kangaroo species, they are mostly sedentary staying within a well-defined home range. When forage is poor, kangaroos will travel large distances to more favorable feeding grounds.

At times, red kangaroos congregate in large numbers; in areas with much forage. These groups can number as many as 1500 individuals. However, they normally live in separate groups of 2-4 members. The most common groups are females and their young. Membership of these groups is very flexible and males are not territorial, fighting over only females during the mating season. Most dominance fighting takes place between young males in which they will "box" one another using their feet and forelimbs. They are mostly nocturnal and rest in the shade during the day. Grazing takes up most of their daily activity.

All kangaroos are herbivorous, subsisting solely on plants. They have chambered stomachs and regurgitate and chew cud just like cows. If water is not easily accessible, red kangaroos can manage. This due to the fact that they eat sufficient plants, which contain ample amounts of water. During a hot season they may only drink water up to two times per week and less during the cooler season when ample vegetation is available.

Trivia

  • While male kangaroos have the distinctive red fur of the species, females members of this species are mostly grey with small amounts of orange tints.
  • Her apron mimics a kangaroo's pouch.
