The history of Kemono Friends Pavilion, both in terms of pre-release promotional history and post-release update history.

Pre-Release History

The existence of an upcoming mobile game based on Kemono Friends was first revealed simultaneously with the reveal of Kemono Friends Alarm, both of which were developed by Bushiroad. Details from that point forth were scarce - the game had been targeted for Summer 2017, but the time had come and gone before Pavilion's name was even revealed to the public. However, this changed when the official Bushiroad website for Kemono Friends media was created on August 13th, 2017, giving both titles their name. This was followed by a Kemono Friends Hour stream on August 16th, which detailed Alarm and confirmed an appearance at the upcoming Tokyo Game Show in September.

On September 22nd, at TGS, the first Kemono Friends Pavilion trailer was revealed, and the official Twitter account was opened. The game's art style and a short segment of the game's theme song, Fure Fure Best Friends, which had not yet been officially unveiled, were also shown. However, despite this, the actual gameplay was at the time still unknown. The official Bushiroad website also updated, explaining that you could observe Friends, though the meaning of this was not explained until later on.

The game received little in the way of news until October 18th, when the website updated revealing more gameplay details - notably, that the game would be similar in gameplay to the popular Neko Atsume app. The PV shown at TGS was uploaded to YouTube, and pre-registration began. A pre-registration rewards campaign also began, with the following rewards for registration:

  • 10,000: Pikapika Crystal
  • 30,000: Pikapika Crystal
  • 50,000: Pikapika Crystal
  • 100,000: Golden Mouse Toy
  • 150,000: Pikapika Crystal

Within 24 hours, the first three goals were met, and the total number of pre-registrations was close to meeting the goal for the fourth reward, as well. On October 20th, two days after the beginning of the campagin, the Golden Mouse Toy goal was met. Not long after, the official Pavilion Twitter began to post weekly announcements regarding the gameplay, revealing the inclusion of new Friends simultaneously.

Version 1.0.1

The first update to Kemono Friends Pavilion was announced on 1/29, and went live on 2/2. The update fixed an issue in which Japanese players were confused about the mechanics of watching advertisements for Deluxe Japari Buns, and made the process more clear. The update also fixed an issue in which Friends would use night-specific dialogue during the day if the game was played overseas. In addition to bugfixes, the update saw the inclusion of a new Friend, and two accompanying Playthings. Because of the inclusion of a new Friend, the total number of KemoTalks in the game went from 494 to 521, a total of 27 new KemoTalks.

Version 1.0.2

Version 1.0.2 was announced on 2/6, and was released on 2/9. Over the course of this version period, three major content releases occurred. The first release came with a new Friend, Bald Eagle, and four new Playthings, three of which were related to a Valentine's Day event. These were the Bird Perch and the Heart items listed below. This release brought the KemoTalk total up to 548, adding 27 new KemoTalks. Additionally, the rate at which you could watch ads to receive Deluxe Japari Buns was reduced from once every 12 hours to once every 8 hours, a bonus which was stated to last until 2/15.

Announced on 2/13 and released on 2/15, the second release consisted of one new Friend, the Komodo Dragon, and two new playthings, the Cask with Faucet and the Basket. It was the first content update that did not coincide with the release of a new version number or require the download of an update to the game's APK. This content release brought the KemoTalk total to 565, only adding 17 new KemoTalks featuring the new Friend. The rate for Deluxe Japari Buns was permanently decreased to 8 hours.

A third content release was announced on 2/19 and released on 2/21. It consisted of one new Friend, the Cougar, and four new playthings; the Hula Hoop, the Cat Face Cutout, Big Bell and the Tuna Can. This content release brought the KemoTalk total to 580, adding 15 new KemoTalks featuring the new Friend. The chance of Friends exhibiting their Special Animations was permanently increased.

Version 1.0.3

Version 1.0.3 was announced on 2/26 and released on 2/28. It had one new Friend, the Silky Anteater, and two new playthings: the Jack-in-the-Box and the Hinadan. The update brought the KemoTalk total to 593, adding 13 new KemoTalks featuring the new Friend. Additionally, a new Daily Challenge was revealed that would be going into effect on 3/1, which involved viewing 30 Friends in one day. Strangely, the new Friend in the initial content release of 1.0.3 could be encountered without updating your game from 1.0.2. A day later, a quick update was sent out with updates to Bald Eagle and Atlantic Puffin's models, due to inconsistencies with the official art. 50 Pikapika was sent to the present box of players as an apology.

A livestream was held on 3/5 that announced the upcoming inclusion of a tool to convert duplicate Playthings into Rough Steel, along with a new Area coming in the next month. 11 upcoming Friends were simultaneously revealed, including the following as-of-yet unseen Friends:

  • Okapi
  • Indian Peafowl
  • Tasmanian Devil
  • Japanese River Otter
  • Fossa
  • Malayan Tapir

A content update was announced on 3/5 and released on 3/7. It featured Gray Wolf, and included four new items, three of which were recolors of the time-limited Valentine's Day items from 1.0.2, in honor of White Day. The fourth new Plaything was the Writing Table. Additionally, the Glass Table and Wooden Table Playthings were added to the list of possible craftable items. The total number of KemoTalks was raised from 593 to 606, reaching 600+ Talks and including a total of 13 additional Talks.

Version 1.0.4

1.0.4 was announced on 3/12 and released on 3/14. It featured Reticulated Giraffe, and included four new items. Two of these playthings, the Step and the Dumbbell, were released in anticipation of the forthcoming Plaything-conversion system; they are both the first items to be craftable with solely Rough Steel. The total number of KemoTalks was raised from '606' to '619', including a total of 13 additional Talks. Furthermore, the ad-cooldown rate for Deluxe Japari Buns was reduced from 8 hours to 6 hours.

The Plaything-conversion system was released within a day of this update, allowing duplicate Playthings to be converted into Rough Steel, a previously unattainable material which could be used to make three-star or higher Playthings.

A content update was announced on 3/19 and released on 3/20. It featured Tibetan Sand Fox, and included two new items, one of which (the Sakura Tree) was released to celebrate the cherry blossom season. Additionally, the Turtle Boat Plaything was added to the list of possible craftable items. The total number of KemoTalks was raised from 619 to 632, including a total of 13 additional Talks.

The next content update was announced on 3/26 and released on 3/28. It added Japanese River Over, and two new items, the Wooden Water House and the Cherry Blossom Petals. 13 new KemoTalks were added, bringing the total to 645. Additionally, in apology for a short service outage not long after the update went live, all players received 10 Pikapika Crystals.
