What is Kemono Friends?

Kemono Friends, also known as KemoFure, is a Japanese multimedia franchise created by Mine Yoshizaki, that focuses on the adventures of anthropomorphized animal girls known simply as Friends. It began as a 2015 mobile game but has expanded into a manga, stage play and wildly successful 2017 anime with multiple new projects planned for the future. While it is a relatively new IP, the franchise has succeeded in making a name for itself on its path to becoming a "series that will last 100 years".

The universe of Kemono Friends, contrary to its innocent appearance, is expansive and complex. It boasts a cast of over 400 characters as well as an intricate and puzzling backstory. What's more, much of the series' media has never seen an official release outside of its native Japan. Our wiki, Japari Library, exists as a resource for the series' English-speaking fanbase. It features translations, detailed analyses of the franchise's lore, and information on Friends and the real creatures from which they came.

Friend of the Week

Polar Bears are the largest land carnivore in the world. They're native to the sea ice and coasts of the arctic regions. They're around 2.5 meters in length and weigh up to 700 kg. They survive the cold of the arctic through their thick fat and layers of fur. The hollow outer hair appears white but is actually transparent. The skin is black. Due to their dependency on sea ice both as habitat and food source, they're classified as marine mammals like whales, dolphins, seals and sea otters.

Polar Bears need the fat of the seals for their own insulation against the cold. They also occasionally catch narwhals and beluga whales at breathing holes. They may also feed on reindeer, birds, eggs and rodents if given the chance. They're excellent swimmers and have been spotted as far as 100 kilometers offshore. Despite being solitary for most of their lives, they are not territorial. They're stealth hunters and, under normal circumstances, will not attack unless hungry or provoked and instead choose to flee.

Polar Bears mate in spring in the best areas to hunt seal. Males will fight over the breeding females. In fall, the pregnant females dig maternity dens to fall into a state similar to hibernation. The cubs are born in the winter months and the family will not leave the den until spring. The cubs will stay with their mother for up to two and a half years. Adult females often adopt motherless cubs.

Polar Bears may rarely breed with grizzlies in overlapping territory. The appearance of these hybrids is a mix between the two bear species but their behaviour is closer to polar than grizzly bears. The so-called pizzly bears are still able to breed, as a DNA test of a dead pizzly with a hybrid mother and grizzly father proved.

Kemono Friends' Polar Bear appeared in the Nexon Game, Festival and in the crowd of the PPP concert of the anime. She has white hair with a black spot. She wears a white fur jacket, gloves, fur boots and stockings. Like the other bear friends, she wields a large paw on a stick as a weapon. She is solitary and a bit reckless in order to achieve her goals. Only after getting closer to the protagonist will she realize that fighting together is more effective.
