What is Kemono Friends?

Kemono Friends, also known as KemoFure, is a Japanese multimedia franchise created by Mine Yoshizaki, that focuses on the adventures of anthropomorphized animal girls known simply as Friends. It began as a 2015 mobile game but has expanded into a manga, stage play and wildly successful 2017 anime with multiple new projects planned for the future. While it is a relatively new IP, the franchise has succeeded in making a name for itself on its path to becoming a "series that will last 100 years".

The universe of Kemono Friends, contrary to its innocent appearance, is expansive and complex. It boasts a cast of over 400 characters as well as an intricate and puzzling backstory. What's more, much of the series' media has never seen an official release outside of its native Japan. Our wiki, Japari Library, exists as a resource for the series' English-speaking fanbase. It features translations, detailed analyses of the franchise's lore, and information on Friends and the real creatures from which they came.

Friend of the Week

The chicken is by far one the most common and widespread domestic animals. While they're primarily kept as a source of food, the more docile breeds make for excellent pets. Originally from south-east Asia, the chicken, the domesticated subspecies of the red junglefowl, found its way to egypt in 1400 BC, Greece in around 500 BC and eventually the rest of the world.

Chickens are ground-living birds which aren't capable of long-distance flight but may fly to get over fences, explore or escape danger. They're white or brown in colour and have a red comb on the top of their head, which is bigger on males. This comb may become pale if the chicken is not in a good condition, either mentally or physically. Their plumage is usually white, bright or dark brown in colour. In many breeds, the male also has more beautiful, shiny feathers on his back and neck.

Chickens are highly social and animals living in flocks. They have pecking orders determining which one gets to eat first, similar to dogs. If a chicken finds food, they will call for others before eating and mother hens will call for their chicks instead of directly feeding their young like other birds do. Chicken embryos do not develop until they're being incubated once the mother has a full nest. That way, all chicks will hatch around the same time, even if the eggs were laid two weeks apart. Depending on the breed, hens may lay an egg almost every day. They also like sharing nests and will incubate eggs that aren't their own, even those of other species with larger or smaller eggs like quails or pheasants.

The Chicken friend of Kemono Friends has first appeared in the first guidebook. She dons a large red comb and red side bangs in her otherwise white long hair. She wears a slightly beige miniskirt and vest above a white shirt and a red ribbon around her neck and yellow thigh high boots with white toe caps. Her most recent appearance is in the Kemono Friends Festival mobile game. Due to a lack of dialogue and interaction in both her appearances, not much is known of her personality.

Community Poll

2018 is off to a good start with our largest poll ever! How'd that happen when the poll got put up so late, anyway? The poll results indicate that the "main" style of Kemono Friends' art, the illustrations drawn for every Friend by Mine Yoshizaki, are the most popular with our readers. With less than half of the votes that went to Mine's art, the 3D models featured in the Kemono Friends anime come next in line. Furai's manga art, as well as the chibi style of the newly-released Kemono Friends Pavilion trailed behind both, with 13 and 9 votes respectively. I guess you can't beat the original!

This month's poll is, as I'm sure many of you expected, all about Kemono Friends Pavilion, which was released at the end of January. How are you liking it so far? We're curious as to what aspect of the game (if any!) our readers like the most.
