—King Penguin's introduction
The King Penguin is a type of penguin Friend first revealed by Mine Yoshizaki on Twitter. In April of 2020 she made her debut in Kemono Friends Pavilion and in April of 2021 she was added to Kemono Friends 3.
Appearance
King Penguin has long black hair, with the right side of their bangs ending with a red detail. Like the other penguins, she wears headphones, hers being pointed and orange. Unlike the Emperor Penguin, her hair covers the left eye and she has a distinctively more cheery expression.
For clothing, King Penguin wears a white leotard with a yellow gradient at the top, and long socks that appear to have zippers. Seemingly attached to her leotard is an open black turtleneck with short sleeves and dark blue shoulders. Underneath are black and white arm-length gloves that represent their real-world counterpart's flippers.

In Real Life
King penguins are typically what people imagine when they think of a regular penguin. They're the second biggest kind of penguin, being slightly shorter than the Emperor penguin. They are the brightest colored penguins, with their necks and heads sporting a striking orange-yellow color.
There's an estimated 2 million breeding pairs in the wild. King penguins can be found on subantarctic islands, such as the Crozet Islands, Kerguelen, Falkland, Macquarie, Prince Edward, South Georgia and South Sandwich. They're not restricted to the cold, however; King penguins have also been spotted in locales such as Brazil.
King penguins swim at an average of 5.2MPH, and can travel up to 1,200 miles in search of food. They enjoy eating fish and squid. Their feeding habits change during the day; at nighttime they stick to shallow waters, and at daytime they dive deeper into the waters for their fish. They can eat up to 450 fish per day.
Their main threats are leopard seals and orcas, who see them as prey. The eggs of King penguins are ideal foods for sheathbills, skuas, and giant petrels.
Trivia
- King penguins do not build nests, but instead keep their eggs warm using a leathery pouch above their legs.
