The first animated feature of the Kemono Friends franchise, simply titled Kemono Friends, is a 2017 3D CGI anime that ran from January 11th, 2017 to March 29th, 2017. Its original run contained 12 full-length episodes, featuring the adventures of a human named Kaban and her cheerful companion Serval. Following an enormously successful first run and widespread acclaim, it was renewed for a second season, referred to as Kemono Friends 2.
The series was simulcast with English subtitles on Crunchyroll. On May 25, 2019, Discotek announced their HD Blu-Ray release of the first season with an English dub by Sound Cadance Studios.[1]
Plot
A human with no prior memories awakens in the middle of a savanna. Before long, she encounters a kind and playful animal girl called Serval, who introduces the human to her home: a massive, open zoo called Japari Park, where she and her fellow Friends live simple and happy lives. Serval asks the human what kind of animal she is, but she isn't sure herself. Never one to become discouraged, the Friend gives her new friend the name "Kaban", after the backpack in her possession. Serval merely offers to escort Kaban to the ends of the savanna, but the two end up on a grand adventure which takes them all over the island, making dozens of new friends along the way.

Trivia
- In the early stages of production of the scripts, they were written without deciding on specific Friends and would instead have placeholders, like (Friend that can swim) and (Friend that is strong). They would later decide on Friends that fit the role in terms of ability and making sense for being in that area.
- The pictures of abandoned amusement parks that are seen in the closing credits was Tatsuki's idea as a way to make viewers feel closer to Japari Park by showing places in the real world that used to be full of joy but are now abandoned.
