Origins
Inugami Gyoubu (隠神刑部) is based off of the Japanese mythological figure of the same name. "Tale of the Matsuyama Disturbance and the Eight Hundred and Eight Tanuki", a folk tale based off of the historical record Iyo Nagusa that added more fantastical elements. In it, Gyoubu was a bake-danuki that was the leader of 808 tanuki and protected Matsuyama Castle. During the O-le Soudou, conflicts between samurai and the aristocracy in Japan in the Edo period, Gyoubu was manipulated by the rebels into supporting their cause. The tale has multiple variations based off of what role he played in the insurrection and how he was defeated.
Characters based off of Gyoubu have appeared in other Japanese TV shows and movies including the Ghibli film Pom Poko, the TV anime Shinkalion Z, and the tokusatsu film The Great Yokai War: Guardians.
Trivia
- The 808 on her drink bottle refers to the mythological Gyoubu being the leader of 808 tanuki.
- As revealed by concept arts shown in the Kemono Friends 3 3rd Anniversary Shop in Shinjuku Marui, Inugami Gyoubu's pleaded skirt is in fact tucked inward into her undergarment to create the puffy look.
