Common Brushtail Possums are a widely distributed mammal, native to mainland Australia and also found in Tasmania and New Zealand. They are large possums with big, slightly pointed ears, large eyes and a black bushy prehensile tail. The body fur color varies according to the habitats, some of them presenting silver gray, brownish red, and almost black fur in some subspecies, with the underside being lighter in color. As all marsupials, females have a pouch to carry their young.

Usually found in open forests and woodland areas, making their home in the hollow limbs of trees. In the wild, Common Brushtail Possums are arboreal and nocturnal, feeding on a variety of plants, leaves, fruits and flowers, some of them being highly toxic and putting to test this marsupial's great ability to adapt to those dietary resources. Those animals have adapted well to live in urban areas, taking refuge in the roofs of houses and becoming opportunistic feeders. They spend most their lives solitarily, protecting their territory by scent marking and deep vocalizations.

Common Brushtail Possums have two breeding sessions across the year, but it's common for females to give birth only once per year. A single child is born in 4 months, remaining weaned for around 6 months and starting to disperse at around 8 to 18 months. Females can start reproducing at about 12 months of age, while the males reach sexual maturity after being 2 years old.
