In Real Life
Also known as simply a 'chukar', the chukar partridge is native to the Middle East and sourthern Asia. However, they can also be found in the US after they were introduced to the country for the sakes of hunting. Despite this, they've established a thriving home in the more arid locales in western USA, and enjoy living amongst cliffs, mountains, and canyons.
Because of their love for drier regions, it can be tricky for the chukar to get food and drink. They get the majority of their food from seeds, berries, and leaves. During the summer they will also feast on the thriving insects that are around. During the winter, the chukar's diet consists almost exclusively of seeds.
Chukar males attract females by tilting their heads and circling the potential mate. Should the female accept, the pair may undergo practice feeding sessions for when they have chicks. When they do finally have offspring, the chukar nest will be situated on the ground, and will contain between 6-20 eggs. The female takes care of the eggs, but may divvy up half of the eggs for the male to take care of as well.
Unfortunately, the chukar's status as a game bird does mean it has a lot of predators. While in the egg, chukars can be victims to magpies, ravens, and snakes. When an adult, they can fall prey to cats, foxes, skunks, hawks, falcons, eagles, lions, and gray wolves. Of course, due to their nature of being introduced as a game bird, humans are always keen to hunt and eat wild chukar.
