In Real Life

Black jaguars are not a species or subspecies, but merely refers to jaguars (Panthera onca) with melanism, a dark pigmentation conferred by a dominant allele. Black jaguars make up about 6% of the entire jaguar population, being incredibly effective hunters in the dark in part to their black coat. Lacking any special features other than aesthetic that differentiate them from regular jaguars, their ecology is generally the same. They roam large areas in search of a mate in the Americas, generally along the equator. Diet consists of whatever prey is available. Due to deforestation from agriculture, their hunting area and range and now severely limited.
