In Real Life
Black-tailed prairie dogs live in colonies scattered throughout the plains of the United States, Mexico, and Canada. Black-tailed prairie dogs are small rodents with a height of about 16 inches. They are tan over most of their body except for the lighter colored belly. The easiest way to tell the black-tailed prairie dog from other prairie dogs is to look for its namesake black tipped tail.
The seeds stems, roots and leaves of forbs (flowering plants), grasses and weeds make up most of the prairie dog's diet. It will sometimes eat grasshoppers, beetles and other insects. Clearing away the plants around the burrow helps the prairie dog spot predators. In the fall, prairie dogs put on a layer of fat to help them survive in the winter. Prairie dogs don't hibernate, but when the winter weather is extremely cold or snowy, they may go into a light hibernation-like sleep and stay in their burrows for a few days.
Prairie dogs are colonial animals that live in complex networks of tunnels with multiple openings. Colonies are easily identified by the raised-burrow entrances that give the diminutive prairie dogs some extra height when acting as sentries and watching for signs of danger. The tunnels contain separate "rooms" for sleeping, rearing young, storing food and eliminating waste.
