Appearance

Angolan giraffe, also known as Namibian giraffe, is a subspecies of giraffe living in arid regions in southern Africa including northern Namibia, south-western Zambia, Botswana, and western Zimbabwe. The major difference in appearance from other subspecies is its pattern. It has large relatively light brown blotches with edges that are either notched or with angular extensions. The patches are surrounded by a pale cream color. There is uneven spotting patterns extending throughout the legs except the upper part of the face. Patches on the neck and rump are often smaller. It also has a white patch on its ears.
Despite their name, Angolan giraffe were once locally extinct in Angola until recently they were translocated from Namibia. Its population was estimated to be 5,000 three decades ago and has risen to over 20,000 in the wild. This subspecies is now listed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List.
Trivia
- IUCN currently recognises only one species of giraffe with nine subspecies. However, a 2020 study showed that depending on the method adopted, different taxonomic hypotheses recognizing from two to six species can be considered for the genus Giraffe.
- Angolan Giraffe is categorized into a subspecies of Southern giraffe under three or four species taxonomies and as a giraffe species under eight species taxonomy.
