In Real Life

The Acorn Woodpecker is an insectivorous granivore that inhabit the western coasts of the United States, and migrate south to Central America during the winter. Unlike other relatives, acorn woodpeckers are very specialized, and get most of their calories from the consumption of acorns. This particular species heavily relies on them to survive. Occasionally, they will feed on sap, insects, and fruit.

They store the acorns they've collected by creating holes in objects called granaries, in which they store and defend their cache for later consumption. While the most common granary base are dead trees, but the acorn woodpecker will also turn man-made items such as fenceposts into storage facilities.
