In Real Life
Culpeos are a canid species of the genus Lycalopex native to the western side of South America, from Ecuador to southern Chile and Argentina, throughout the line of the Andes. Averaging 4 to 14 kg, with a body length of 45 to 95 cm and tail length of 30 to 50 cm, they are the largest member of Lycalopex and the second largest of all South American canids; in the latter regard, they are surpassed only by the maned wolf. In most individuals, the coat is grizzled gray on the back, reddish-brown in the head and legs, and dark gray on the tail with a black tip. While the culpeo and other members of Lycalopex are often called South American foxes, due to their convergent simiarities, they are in fact more closely related to jackals and wolves.
A solitary and adaptable species, culpeos can be found across a wide breadth of habitats and are reported to be nocturnal in some areas, while also being diurnal or crepuscular in others. The various habitats of the culpeo include rugged mountain terrain, deep valleys, open deserts, and deciduous forests, typically occuring at ranges between 0 and 4500 m above sea level. This wide distribution of habitat and active hours may be explained by the culpeo being a dietary generalist, as they are omnivores and eat all kinds of prey; small ungulates, hares, sheep, insects, birds, lizards, fruit, and carrion are all staples of the culpeo's diverse diet. Because they consume many small animal species as well as carrion, culpeos have an important role as population controllers and natural cleaners.
Trivia
- The name culpeo is said to stem from the Mapuche "culpem", meaning "madness", referring to how this canine boldly reveals itself to hunters.
