The Tasmanian Devil is found on the island of Tasmania in Australia, though Tasmanian devils can live anywhere on the island, they prefer coastal scrublands and forests. But no matter what area of the island they inhabit, these animals sleep under rocks or in caves, logs or burrows.
Tasmanian devils are strictly carnivorous, surviving on small prey such as snakes, birds, fish, and insects and frequently feasting communally on carrion. They are at their most rowdy when jockeying for position on a large carcass. Devils are solitary and nocturnal, spending their days alone in hollow logs, caves, or burrows, and emerging at night to feed. They use their long whiskers and excellent sense of smell and sight to avoid predators and locate prey and carrion. During the day it usually hides in a den, or dense bush. It roams considerable distances (up to 16 km) along well-defined trails in search of food. It usually ambles slowly with a characteristic gait but can gallop quickly with both hind feet together. Young Tasmanian devils are more agile however and can climb trees. Although not territorial, Tasmanian devils have a home range.
