A New Morning (Japanese: あたらしいあさ) is the sixth episode of the second season of Kemono Friends. In this episode, it's revealed what Kaban has been doing in Japari Park since season one, expansion of the mechanics of Sandstar, and an explanation for the erratic behavior of Siberian Tiger.

Summary

After the sudden appearance of Siberian Tiger in Episode 5, the Friends flee and Kyururu trips. As Siberian Tiger runs off chasing the burning paper airplane that also caused Serval to become lost in thought, Caracal helps Kyururu off the ground. Kaban appears, warning them to come with her before Siberian Tiger returns. She locks eyes with Serval, recognizing her, but their moment is interrupted when Siberian Tiger roars. Everyone runs their separate ways, but Serval remains dazed and takes a while to catch up to Caracal and Kyururu. The gray Lucky Beast leaps out of Kyururu's bag to tell the two that his warning saved their lives, and Caracal tries to scold him for his warning not being soon enough in advance. As the trio intend to leave the jungle, the Lucky Beast starts to walk away before running out of battery and tipping over. Another roar can be heard, and Kaban drives up in the Japari Bus, calling to them to get in. Siberian Tiger can be seen walking up to where the Bus was just moments before before letting out another roar as they make their getaway.

As they drive, Kaban asks the trio how they're doing and their names. The bus seems to be in disrepair, and Kaban's Lucky Beast on her wrist mentions needing maintenance. After they exchange introductions, Serval is visibly moved by hearing Kaban's name again. After Kyururu thanks her for saving them, she tells them she was out gathering ingredients by coincidence for dinner and tells them to look in the bag in the back of the bus. Serval and Caracal are confused by seeing the raw ingredients and ask if you can eat them, but Kaban explains that she's going to cook them. When she asks what the trio were doing, Kyururu goes into his explanation about finding his home, but Kaban cuts in to show she already knows what a home is unlike the Friends he'd met up to that point. She asks him if he's a human like she is. They pass through the gate and arrive at Kaban's house, a research lab inhabited by her, Northern White-Faced Owl and Eurasian Eagle Owl.

Inside, Kaban deposits the Lucky Beast collar she was wearing from before into a drawer filled with other collars of various shapes. She tells the trio to relax because Siberian Tiger can't reach them in the lab, and Serval asks what kind of Friend she is. Kaban begins to explain how rarely, Sandstar causes Friends to instead be born as Beasts. She mentions their dangerous nature and asks them if they noticed the broken shackles around Siberian Tiger's wrists, which are explained to be remnants of the past from when humans tried to control Beasts. Nearby, the elevator opens, and Northern White-Faced Owl and Eurasian Eagle-Owl announce tea time has come and bring the trays to sit with everyone else. On one of the trays is an hourglass which the Professor states will tell when the tea is ready once it all reaches the bottom. Caracal and Serval are amazed by it and the Professor tells them they can have it as a gift. Kaban introduces the owls to the trio as her research partners. They offer to show the group the research lab, but Eurasian Eagle-Owl insists they have to have tea first and that they may only see the research lab "just this once."

After tea, they move to the research lab which is in a garage outside and where the Japari Bus is stored. While everyone is taking in the spectacle of the lab, Kyururu asks what they research. Northern White-Faced Owl hands him a bottle of Sandstar. Kaban and the Professor explain what Sandstar is to him. Eurasian Eagle-Owl then holds up a bottle of Cellium and says that it's what creates Celliens under the right conditions. Serval asks about the map on the wall dotted with X's, which Kaban tells them are places near the coast where strong Celliens are appearing. The Professor and Assistant admit they're unsure how so many could appear because it would take large amounts of Cellium but they can't find the source of it. Like Sandstar, Cellium comes from volcanoes, but they explain that none of the ones they've found on land are active, confusing them as to the source of these Celliens. When Kyururu's stomach growls, Kaban suggests they have dinner from the food she foraged earlier in the day.

Caracal cries out after trying the hotpot that the Professor cooked and her face turns red from how spicy it is. She asks if it's even safe to eat but the owls tell her to keep eating it, to which she believes there's no way she'll actually like it. The owls then smirk when she can't stop eating it after all. Serval notices Kyururu is lost in thought and asks what's on his mind. When he wonders what happens to Friends eaten by Celliens, Northern White-Faced Owl explains how they revert to their animal form, and Eurasian Eagle-Owl explains the memory loss they experience even if they later become Friends again.

During the night while everyone sleeps, Kyururu turns in bed, having a dream. Wearing the diving helmet from Episode 3, he swims underwater. Suddenly, Common Bottlenose Dolphin appears, asking why he's there and warns him to flee, reminding him about the ocean's mood worsening recently. She points to the current, from which a huge, shadowy boat-shaped figure with red eyes closes in on them before Kyururu jolts awake in his bed. While Serval and Caracal sleep, he sneaks out to the research lab to pore over books about the ocean. He comes to a sudden realization about the source of the Celliens, and the owls surprise him by asking what he realized. When he theorizes the Cellium comes from the sea, the owls become skeptical. Northern White-Faced Owl claims it's impossible, grabbing a bottle of Sandstar and bottle of Cellium, pointing out that they come from volcanoes which are on land, not in the ocean. Kyururu counters with the existence of submarine volcanoes, turning a page in the book on the desk to show the owls. They see the logic in his theory as the appearances are all near the ocean, so Northern White-Faced Owl hands him a bottle and tells him it's up to him to prove his hypothesis. They take hold of him and fly out the sunroof of the lab, setting out for the ocean. As they leave, the bottle of Cellium left on the desk begins to shake and bubble over through the cork.

Kyururu collects Sandstar from the ocean with the help of the Professor and Assistant.

As they approach the ocean, the owls remind Kyururu of the importance of the work they're doing to reassure him because he's scared. Back at Kaban's house, Serval searches and calls out for Kyururu, with Caracal reporting she can't find him where she searched either. They inform Kaban that Kyururu is missing, and she tells them the owls are missing, too. She suggests they're all together, but they're interrupted by loud banging noises coming from the research lab. They encounter a Cellien that copied the form of the Japari Bus, and Caracal is scared it may have eaten Kyururu and the owls. When they arrive at the ocean, the owls tell Kyururu to search for Sandstar, but they seem to have forgot that humans can't see in the dark as they proclaim they can see just fine. When they spot some Sandstar, they swoop down and have him collect it in the bottle, but quickly retreat and almost drop him in the process. Northern White-Face Owl says it was because of something in the water. Suddenly, the shadow of a colossal Cellien can be seen moving through the water beneath them. Eurasian Eagle-Owl wonders if it's even possible for Celliens to exist in the water, calling back to Episode 12 of Season 1 in which a huge Cellien was defeated by dissolving it in the ocean. Serval and Caracal release the bus Cellien from the garage and work together to jump on top of it, but are forced off by its long arms. Caracal serves as a distraction and calls out to it, while Serval sneaks behind and delivers a single, devastating blow to defeat it from above. Serval asks Kaban if she's okay and she thanks the cats for protecting her. They prepare to go search for Kyururu and the owls, but he calls out to them as they return from the ocean. He shows the Sandstar bottle and the Professor explains that it can answer their question of where the Celliens are coming from.

The next day, the owls wish the trio safe travels and hopes Kyururu finds his home. Kaban gifts him a Lucky Beast collar, which begins speaking and promising to guide them. Northern White-Faced Owl tells them to look for Margay at the live stage if they need help. Kyururu thanks them one last time for everything as they begin to leave. He chases after Serval who is eager to continue looking for his home. Caracal stays behind to ask Kaban if she was the one Serval talked about going on adventures with. She sounds on the verge of tears after hearing this and tells Caracal to take care of Serval for her, with everyone smiling happily as they part ways.

Credits Sketch

Northern White-Faced Owl and Eurasian Eagle-Owl pay a visit to Suri Alpaca's café in this sketch. Reading from their books, Northern White-Faced Owl asks a question about the curry ingredient turmeric to Eurasian Eagle-Owl, who interjects before the question is finished to answer. Eurasian Eagle-Owl then reads a question about the ingredients of the spice blend garam masala, and Northern White-Faced Owl interjects to answer. After Suri Alpaca compliments their speed, Northern White-Faced Owl declares that she was slightly faster than Eurasian Eagle-Owl, who also says she was faster, prompting Suri Alpaca to tell them to be nice and offers them tea, which they both accept. Then, the three announce the title of the next episode.

Major Events

• Kaban saves Kyururu, Serval, and Caracal from Siberian Tiger with the Japari Bus and delivers them to her house, a research lab with Northern White Faced Owl and Eurasian Eagle Owl.
• Cellium and its effects are explained to be the source of all Celliens. Like Sandstar, it is also produced by volcanoes.
• The negative effects of Sandstar are revealed to create Beast Friends
• Kyururu has a dream about an underwater Cellien. Based on this and mentions of "the sea not being happy" during her trip to Marine Life Park, he concludes there are underwater volcanoes producing Cellium.
• Kyururu is abducted by the Professor and her Assistant, to gather a sample of Sandstar from the sea. They see a massive Cellien underwater.
• Ceruleum left in the lab creates a Cellien in the shape of the Japari Bus, which Caracal and Serval take down. Kaban mentions that it copied the vehicle.
• Kaban sorrowfully asks Caracal to take care of Serval, as Serval has no memory of her. Caracal, Serval, and Kyururu leave together to find Margay.
• Caracal finally remembers Kaban from Serval's previous tales of traveling with a human.
