A family of gentoo penguins on Wiencke Island.

Gentoo penguins, easily recognizable by the white stripe extending across the top of its head, are a common species of penguin native to Antarctica as well as numerous nearby islands in the far-southern hemisphere. Their long tails are particularly prominent amongst their fellow penguins.

They live in breeding colonies scattered across various sub-Antarctic islands, favoring ice-free surfaces where grass is present. They build their nests out of stone, and are prone to bickering with one another over stone ownership. Pairs of gentoos lay two eggs at a time, which are incubated by both parents. Gentoo chicks have grey backs with white fronts.

The penguins' diets mainly consist of crustaceans, rather than fish, but are known to eat whatever aquatic life they are able to feed on, depending on the area they live in. Gentoos are excellent swimmers, even among penguins, reaching speeds of 36 kilometers per hour (22 mph) underwater when on the hunt. This is a useful asset in avoiding their predators, which include sea lions, leopard seals and killer whales. Skuas, while they are no threat to an adult gentoo, are known to steal their eggs and prey upon their chicks.
