Japanese Cormorants are a species of birds that lives on the Pacific coast of Asia, breeding on the corresponding coasts of Russia, North and South Korea, China, Taiwan and Japan. They are seabirds with long necks and bills, growing to be at about 90 cm in length and their wingspan can reach 140 cm. Their black feathers gives them a sinister look, with iridescent green and bronze feather within them, and thin white feathers that extend out from their head and neck.

Those seabirds nest in groups on rocky coastlines, rarely being found inland. They are carnivore, and feed mainly on fish, which they hunt with great skill by diving underwater and swimming to catch them. Humans have historically exploited those skills, with fishermen training those seabirds to catch fish for them. By tying a rope to the base of the neck, loose enough so that they can only swallow the small ones, the fisherman waits till the bird captures a large fish and then helps them to remove it from their throat, although this or other methods without collars are not as common today, since more efficient methods for catching fish already exist.
